Basal Cell Carcinoma
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. It often presents as a pink papule, sometimes featuring an open sore. It essentially never metastasizes, that is, it doesn't spread to distant sites in the body.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma tends to be a pink, often scaly growth. If untreated, it can metastasize.
Melanoma
This is a cancer of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes). As such, it tends to be pigmented (dark). Melanoma accounts for most skin cancer deaths. In the United States, somebody dies from melanoma every hour. For every one melanoma fatality, however, there are numerous melanoma survivors. In other words, most melanomas are curable. Early detection plays a critical role in this.
